How teleconsultation solutions have been deployed effectively

Telemedicine is a growing sector in the UK, supported by Transparency Market Research predicting the industry to be worth £26 billion by 2020. At Questmark, we’ve already been a part of and experienced the positive impact teleconsultations can have within healthcare.

Clark Clinic

The Children’s Heartbeat Trust works closely with Clark Clinic, Royal Belfast Hospital for Sick Children to ensure that children with heart disease receive the best care and treatment possible.

Questmark were a part of a three-year Home Care Project by the Paediactric Cardiology Department, with a 2 year £130,000 grant from the Department of Health as part of its telecare programme. The project has now become a fully-funded service available throughout Northern Ireland.

By placing video conferencing systems in patients homes, enabling the ability for teleconsultations, doctors have been able to monitor patients without regular admittance to medical facilities. Since the implementation of the services, thousands of patients have been involved in the projects. The new facilities and expansion ensure that every family in Northern Ireland that has a child whom would benefit from this type of post-operative care, can now be offered the service.

As video conferencing terminals have become more available, the units are now left in the home for between 4-5 months rather than the 10-11 weeks of the trial.

“The success of the service has proved that video conferencing can provide major assistance in the post-operative care and monitoring of babies and small children with major congenial heart conditions.”

Benefits of Teleconsultations

Video appointments with physicians is something we will see become increasingly popular over the next few years. You may already be able to have an appointment with your doctor over the phone and while phone call consultations are useful, video has an array of additional benefits including:

Reduced waiting times, cut down on costs incurred by patients not turning up to appointments, better access to GP’s for patients travelling or living in remote areas, reduced spread of infections, outpatient and physiotherapy care, easily communicate with specialists all over the world and share documents or results with patients during a video call.
